Feed AI Assistants Documentation First, Not Clever Prompts

Write product, functional and architecture specs before asking an AI assistant to generate code, then version each release.

“the secret isn't better prompts - it's feeding your AI assistant 50KB+ of comprehensive documentation.”

  • Gleb wrote product, functional and architecture specs, plus a README for each of the 4 agents, and fed them into Cursor AI as context.
  • He used the loop Document → Context → Generate → Review → Iterate to get FastAPI routes, React components, tests and Docker orchestration from the specs.
  • Versioned releases (v1.0.0 to v1.2.0) with a CHANGELOG.md kept the AI-assisted work systematic and traceable.

Stop prompting AI blindly. Here's how I built a production-ready CrewAI system with documentation-driven development 🚀

Building DungeonMancer taught me: the secret isn't better prompts - it's feeding your AI assistant 50KB+ of comprehensive documentation. Cursor AI became my development partner! 📚🤖

📚 THE DOCUMENTATION-FIRST METHOD

What Ed Donner's course taught me: Document the system first, then let AI build it systematically.

My approach: 1. Created product-spec, functional-spec, architecture-spec 2. Detailed README for each of 4 agents with implementation roadmap 3. Fed specs into Cursor AI for rich context 4. Versioned development: v1.0 → v1.1 → v1.2

🤖 CURSOR AI AS DEVELOPMENT PARTNER

Key pattern: Document → Context → Generate → Review → Iterate

What Cursor AI helped with: - Converting specs into working FastAPI routes - Generating React components from UI specifications - Creating comprehensive test suites from functional specs - Implementing Docker orchestration from architecture docs

🏗️ RESULTS

Version-based development delivered: - v1.0.0: Core CrewAI + FastAPI architecture - v1.1.0: NextJS frontend + Docker orchestration - v1.2.0: WebSocket + polling fallback, auto-refresh UI

Professional practices included: - CHANGELOG.md with detailed release notes - Comprehensive testing with proper fixtures - OpenAI API with cost management and billing - Documentation hub for consistent AI assistance

Result: From documentation to production system with reliability patterns!

💡 KEY INSIGHT

Documentation-First + Cursor AI + Systematic Versioning = Production-Ready AI Systems

This approach unlocked: - Rich Context: 50KB+ documentation feeding into AI assistant - Consistent Quality: Structured prompts ensure reliable code generation - Rapid Iteration: From specs to working features in hours, not days

🔥 COMING IN PART 3

Future roadmap (v1.3.0 with enhanced agents!) and actionable tips for documentation-driven AI projects.

Question for developers: How do you structure your AI-assisted development? Documentation-first or straight into coding? 💬

Ed Donner, your systematic approach transformed how I think about development! 🚀
